Spectacled Dormouse is a species of rodents endemic to South Africa. They have their natural habitats in tropical or subtropical dry shrub lands. Dormice are well known for their long periods of hibernation.

Dormice are generally small rodents with a size of 2.5-7.5 inches in length and 15-200 grams in weight, size varying with the particular species. Overall appearance of spectacled dormice is mouse-like except that they are furred animals and they have scaly tails. They tend to spend their larger time in trees or bushes. However, they are also very agile and well-adapted to climbing. Dormice are nocturnal and omnivorous mammals and they have excellent sense of hearing. They are very vocal, often signaling others with a wide range of vocalizations. They primarily feed  fruits, nut, seeds, berries, flowers and insects. Dormice live in temperate zones in hibernation for large amounts of time, often up to six months in a year or even longer depending upon weather. During cool weather, they may occasionally come out from hibernation for very short periods to eat food. In summer, they accumulate fats in their bodies to keep them nourished during their hibernation periods.

Red bush squirrels have a beautiful red bushy appendage. Squirrels are generally very small animals ranging in size from African Pygmy Squirrels, which are  7-10 cm in length and just 10 gram weight to Alpine Marmot, which are 53-73 cm in length and 5-8 Kg weight.  They have slender bodies with tail and large eyes. Their fur is soft and silky and varies in sizes depending upon the species. Their hind limbs are longer than fore limbs. They have a soft pad on the undersides of their feet. Red Bush Squirrels are generally herbivorous and mainly feed on seeds, plants, fruits and nuts and occasionally on insects and small vertebrates. Porcupine is a rodent endemic to both Old World and New World. They are the third largest living rodents in the world, after capybara and beaver. They are well known for their distinctive coat of spines  or quills, similar to the one on hedgehogs. African Porcupines exist in Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, Italy and Sicily. African Porcupines are also known as Crested Porcupines. They are terrestrial and nocturnal mammals and rarely climb trees but they can swim.

Porcupines are a rounded, slow-moving and large animals with a size of 12-35 pounds in weight, 25-35 inches in length excluding tail that measures about 8-10 inches. Porcupines come in various shades of brown, grey and an unusual white. They are fairly large animals with quills in clusters. Their quills or spines are nothing but modified hair that have been thickened by plates of keratins. Depending upon the species, quills may take different forms and shapes. They are mostly herbivorous animals and feed on roots, bulbs, crops, plants and other vegetations. Sometimes, they also east insects and small vertebrates.

Barbour’s Rock Mouse is a genus of rodents that are native to Southwestern Africa. Their natural habitats subtropical or tropical dry shrub lands and rocky areas. The species is endangered by habitat loss. Other species, known as Pygmy Rock Mouse, are endemic to Angola, Namibia and South Africa. They make their habitats in rocky canyons, cliffs and other areas where there are numerous cracks, fissures and overhanging ledges.

Rock Mouse have a sharp lower point to their V-Shaped infra-orbital canal. Their molar teeth are intermediate between the ancestral cricetid style tooth and dendromurine style tooth. With their sharp incisors, rock mouse can gnaw wood, break into food and bite their predators.  Rock Mouse is generally herbivorous mammal. They usually feed on seeds, plants, vegetations, fruits, nuts and sometimes on insects and small vertebrates. Rock Mouse is a small-sized animal and has a very short breeding cycle. They have the ability to gnaw and eat vast variety of food items.

Tail is black at its tip. With highly developed hind legs, Springhare possess extraordinary capabilities of jumping. They can often leap more than meters in a single jump. They generally feed on plants and vegetations and sometimes on insects. Although Springhare is a nocturnal animal but sometimes they be found to be active even during the day time. Hedgehog is an amazing spiny mammal with stiff pointed spines covering its entire back. They are endemic to Africa, Asia, and certain parts of Europe and they are introduced in Australia and New Zealand. No living species are found in North America. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and insectivorous animals. Urchin and hedge-pig are other names as per the folklores.

Hedgehogs are distinctive spines are essentially hollow hairs that are stiffened by keratins (fibrous structural proteins). Its spines are neither poisonous nor barbed and cannot be easily removed from the body of hedgehogs. Spines come out only once when th animal sheds baby spines and replaces it with adult spines, the process being known as ‘quilling’. Under extreme stress or during sickness, hedgehog may loose some of the spines. Hedgehogs possess a unique ability to roll into a tight ball, thereby causing all the spines to point upwards. This ability provides them the best defense against their predators (foxes, wolves and mongooses). They feed on variety of diets including insects, mice, rodents, snakes and eggs. Pictures of African Animals Bat and Bat Informations

Bats are mammals that are often called ‘flying rodents’ and ‘flying rats’ and often mistaken for insects and birds. Bats are the only mammals capable of sustained flights. Other mammals such as flying squirrels, gliding possums and colugos can only glide for limited distances. Forelimbs of Bats are developed as wings, making it possible for them to fly. There are over 1100 species of bats worldwide, which accounts for about 20% of all mammal species. Bats can be found throughout most of the world. Bats perform a vital ecological role by pollinating flowers and in seed dispersals, many tropical plants being entirely dependent on bats.

Bats range in size from 29 to 33 mm in length and about 1.2 kg in weight. Bats have a wingspan of 1.5 meters. Bats are terrestrial and light-bones creatures and therefore there are very few fossilized remains. Bats can locate prey by emitting high-pitched sounds and listening to the echoes (sonar) of the nearby objects. The process is known as echolocation, an ability that they share with dolphins and whales. Most of bats are active at nights or twilights. They can rarely fly in rain, as rain interferes with their echolocation abilities. Owing to the high mobility, broad distribution and social behaviors, bats are favorable hosts and vectors of diseases. Bats are natural reservoirs for large numbers of pathogens including rabies, Ebola virus and SARS – Severe Acute respiratory Syndrome.
