Scientific studies of the Okapi’s anatomy reveal that it is a cross between a horse, a zebra, and a giraffe. It has a coat that is dark brown to purple in color with the sides of its face colored red. Their notable feature is found in its buttocks, things, and forelegs, where you fill find horizontal white and black rings

The Okapi can live as long as 30 years in captivity. When left in the wild, the life expectancy is shorter, but is still unknown until this present day. It is a grazing animal that thrives on eating leaves, fruits, seeds, ferns and young shoots of forest plants.

The African Squirrel Monkey is a member of the order of primates with scientific name, saimiri sciureus. These monkeys are only as big as squirrels when they grow into adults, weighing between 700 and 1,100 grams and are only about 10 to 14 inches long. The male African squirrel monkey is biologically larger than the female, and has longer canines.

One may commonly find the African squirrel monkey in rainforests. They like to be within close range from vegetation since the latter protects them from preying birds.

African squirrel monkeys are frugivorous (preference for berries) and insectivorous. Occasionally, they also feed on tree frogs and mollusks.

The female African squirrel monkey is left to care for her young, which explains why social interaction is usually dominated by the female species. Like humans, the female African squirrel monkey can only give birth to a singular offspring. Male African squirrel monkeys only socialize with the females during mating season.

The African Impala looks like a deer. Its habitat is found in the plains of Africa where rain is scarce. It is considered a survivor since it is a favorite prey of cheetahs, lions and many other predators.

The African Impala is a grazing mammal and its diet changes according to season but usually comprises of grass and leaves. Feeding grounds are located near watering holes since the impala requires postprandial drinking. It lives in herds for protection. This animal’s senses of hearing, sight and smell are extra-sensitive and are ready for use against predators. Furthermore, it is biologically gifted with a scent gland located above the hoof, which he uses as a tracking device.

The African impala population is composed of more females than males.  Mating season is from March to June and from September to November. The average ration of female to male impalas during breeding season is fifteen females to one male.

Warthogs reside mostly in South Africa and are widespread in East Africa. Riddled with poor vision, warthogs are otherwise keen in their sense of hearing and sense of smell. The physical appearance of warthogs is not generally considered as beautiful. however, they are very remarkable African animals. Because of its relatively high body temperature, the warthog is able to conserve water content in its body for a longer period. This makes them survivors in dry and hot places.

The warthog is a very sturdy mammal with a head that is quite large compared to its body. Protective pads are on both sides of its head with four tusks that are unusual. The upper tusks emerge from the sides of its snout while the lower tusks come from the base of the upper tusks. The whole body of the warthog is covered with bristles.

Warthogs love the moisture and arid lands of the savanna but hate the mountains and the rainforests. They live in groups, often a female warthog together with her young. Male warthogs, on the other hand, go solo, socializing only for mating purposes.

With its origins from the open grasslands and woodlands of the Savannah in Africa, giraffes stay and move together in loose herds. Giraffes stand tallest among all mammals and there are only nine different Giraffe species. These animals eat leaves and fruit using their blue tongues that can be more than 40 centimeters long! Out of all trees that grow, giraffes love the foliage that grown from acacia trees. Giraffes drink when they see water but they can also withstand days without it.

When walking, giraffes move both their legs on the same side forward simultaneously. They can run as fast as 55 kilometers per hour when galloping. They are generally quiet animals but possess the ability to moan, grunt and make a distinctive noise that sounds alike a flute when blown. Like horses, it remains standing when sleeping.

The giraffe is not a common prey in the animal kingdom. However, when it is threatened, it can either release a powerful front leg kick or hammer its head like a mallet against its opponent.

Barbour’s Rock Mouse is a genus of rodents that are native to Southwestern Africa. Their natural habitats subtropical or tropical dry shrub lands and rocky areas. The species is endangered by habitat loss. Other species, known as Pygmy Rock Mouse, are endemic to Angola, Namibia and South Africa. They make their habitats in rocky canyons, cliffs and other areas where there are numerous cracks, fissures and overhanging ledges.

Rock Mouse have a sharp lower point to their V-Shaped infra-orbital canal. Their molar teeth are intermediate between the ancestral cricetid style tooth and dendromurine style tooth. With their sharp incisors, rock mouse can gnaw wood, break into food and bite their predators.  Rock Mouse is generally herbivorous mammal. They usually feed on seeds, plants, vegetations, fruits, nuts and sometimes on insects and small vertebrates. Rock Mouse is a small-sized animal and has a very short breeding cycle. They have the ability to gnaw and eat vast variety of food items.

Hare or jack-rabbits are species of leporids (species of rabbits) that are well known for fast speeds. They can often run at speeds up to 45 mph. Hares tend to live alone or in pairs. In African folklores, hares are considered as tricksters and evil characters, often associated with witches.

Hare is normally a shy animal that may change its behavior in spring season. During spring, hares can be often seen chasing each other around the meadows to attain dominance and more access to breeding females. Occasionally, hares are also spotted boxing with one another during spring. Unlike other rabbits, hares do not bear their young ones below ground in a burrow. Instead, they prefer a shallow depression or flattened nest made from grass. Hares are generally larger than rabbits with longer ears and black markings on their fur. Diet of hare is very much similar to that of rabbits. Like rabbits, hares are also prized as food items and are prepared in the same manner namely, roasted or taken apart for breading and frying. Leopard is the smallest of four ‘big cats’ family comprising of lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar. Due to large-scale hunting, poaching and loss of habitat, the population of leopard has drastically reduced all over the world and now it can be mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Although fragmented population of Leopard can be seen in India, Indochina, Malaysia and China but more or less leopard had been declared as ‘Near Threatened’ species.

Leopards have relatively short legs as compared to its long body. They have a large skull and physically it resembles jaguar. Its fur is marked with rosettes, which lack internal spots unlike jaguars. They weigh around 1501-70 ponds and their body length is about 6-7 feet. They are keen hunters and feed on a variety of food ranging from small rodents to extremely large animals like giraffe or buffalo. They are extremely agile and can climb a tree very swiftly. They can run up to a speed of 60 km/h. Leopards are famous as opportunistic hunters that hunt silently and alone. Leopards can consume any animal that they can catch and hunt.

Chimpanzee or Chimp is the name for two extant species of ape who are the closest living relatives to humans. Commonly available Chimpanzees are living primarily in the central and western Africa. Another variety known as Pygmy Chimpanzees are found in the forests of Democratic Republic of the Congo. Chimpanzees, Gorillas, Human and Orangutans belong to a common biological family Hominidae. Chimps are favorite animals of humans due to their social nature, intelligence and for being almost like humans.

Chimpanzees stay together in a group of about 30-32 animals. They are extremely intelligent and noisy animals. Chimps generally live on a diet of fruits, leaves and other green foods however occasionally they also eat meat of young goats or baboons and small insects. They defend themselves by throwing stones and sticks at their predators. Fully-grown, adult male Chimps can weigh around 70-150 pounds and stand 3 to 4 feet tall. Average life span of Chimpanzees is about 50 years, with a life of maximum 40 years in the wild and around 60 years in the captivity.
